Humans: A Clockwork Orange Symbolism, characterization, and Burgess’s stunning use of language are powerful tools Anthony Burgess utilizes within what most say to be his most famous novel, A Clockwork Orange. They are skillfully used to illustrate his views on how humans all fall into a recurring cycle that eventually brings them back into a state of violence. This return to violence Burgess stresses so heavily on within this novel may be difficult to comprehend without first understanding some of Burgess’s background. Anthony Burgess served shortly in World War Two, only to return to find his wife had been beaten and raped, and died shortly after. Aggeler explains to us in the Dictionary of Literary Biography that, “...his horror of the action itself, senseless male violence against a defenseless woman...was the inspiration for the most shocking scene in A Clockwork Orange.”(32). This frightening and life-altering ordeal in turn led him to question humans as a society and wonder what drives them to fall back on such brutal behavior. Burgess captured much of his feeling......
