This paper will explain the First and Second Ways of Thomas Aquinas’ arguments for God’s existence. From The Five Ways which prove the existence of God developed by Aquinas, the First and Second position God as the first mover of the universe and the first cause for effects. These center from the cosmological argument, also called the “First Cause Argument”, which posits that the universe being here at all means that someone must have created it – it cannot just have come into existence all by itself, out of nothing. This argument says that God must be the explanation. This assumption is contingent upon something external to itself to explain its existence. From the conditions of motion and causality which are necessary to explain the existence of the world, Aquinas concludes in his First and Second Ways that God exists as the unmoved mover and first cause. The five arguments or Ways of Aquinas are conditions that must have been in place in order for the universe to come to be.
