On the surface James Kelman’s ‘Double or Clear Plus a Tenner’ is a short story depicting a day-in-the-life of shift factory workers in late twentieth century Britain: A worker gambles beyond his income despite the expected loss of his and many other jobs. However, an allegory is apparent, suggesting a much wider social comment by the author. Beyond the mundane, routine drudgery of factory life there is subtle allusion to generational change and economic insecurity in Thatcherite Britain where even traditional, unionised and solid industries, such as the factory in the story, have massive job losses looming despite the facade of regular order. Clock in/clock out, nightshift/dayshift, old-hand/new-hand, and apprentice/chargehand. Nothing in real life, however, is so black and white and, reflecting the wider population’s despairing opinion, at the time, of life in general- the employees of the factory have become active, and yet unwitting players (and perhaps pawns) in an impersonal game of chance.
