To Bury or Study? Kennewick Man 10/3/05 9,300 years is ancient history, or is it? Some people think that an ancient skeleton- found by two college students racing along the Columbia River, and later named the Kennewick Man – should be returned and buried. Others contend that these remains- which are right up there with the oldest and most well-preserved humanoid remains- should be studied to unlock the mystery of who, what, when, where and how these bones relate to modern man. The two sides are entrenched in their own ideals and beliefs: one being of tradition, religion, and respect for the dead; the other promoting study, science and data. Is their a statute of limitations on human remains? This was a question posed in Federal court between the traditionalists and the scientist. I, being half Indian and Caucasian, find myself torn on the issue of bury or study. I can easily rationalize the reasons why the Kennewick Man should be returned to his peaceful slumber along the banks of the Columbia River.
