Throughout “The Prize” one example or major influence was that of J. D. Rockefeller’s strategic planning and monopoly of oil in the northeast region of the United States. Many feared him and could not stop his tactics of becoming a huge player or the largest player of an oil refiner and distributor. As the war broke loose in J. D. Rockefeller’s younger years, oil had been struck in Pennsylvania making this his opportunity, and he jumped at it. As a smart young man with an excellent view of business John D. followed the stampede to Pennsylvania with a vengeance and attracted many men who confided in him. Some say his mistress was simply money, and oil was the key to his mistress. In 1862 Rockefeller purchased a small refinery with Maurice Clark and an Englishman Samuel Andrews. The process of refining oil was simple and Rockefeller’s partner Samuel knew a process of cleansing petroleum by the use of sulfuric acid. Rockefeller worked day in and day out because he saw that oil would lead to riches. He had a motto “Pay a profit to nobody.” As business picked up, Rocke......
