African Lit Response 6 Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Sula Peace is one of the main characters in the book, Sula by Toni Morrison, and Janie Starks is the main character in the book, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. One of the main characteristics that stand out about these two is that they are both strong women. There are also some other interesting comparisons about these two characters. The most obvious fact is that both are African American woman who grew up with little or no family at all. In the case of Sula, she was raised by her mother and grandmother and as for Janie, only her grandmother whom she calls Nanny raised her. Both women also grew up without having a father figure around to help raise them, which probably explain why both women were in some way or another looking for a man’s love. The second characteristic that sets these two women apart from the other women in the stories is that they are both very strong-minded women who do not care about what other people think about them. In the story for Sula, her whole town saw her as a symbol of evilness and she was known as the “witch”, but she did ......
