Barker presents Sassoon in the same light throughout the entire passage, as a very calm, collected, sane individual. The first situation where we can see how Sassoon is presented is at dinner and he is analysing and almost judging the other patients. He believes himself to be different from the others, the only sane one. He thinks he doesn’t belong there, “Sassoon, marooned between two particularly bad stammers, felt no need to take part in the conversation.” In this situation, when he is at dinner, Sassoon isolates himself. He doesn’t particularly want to be there, or more specifically, around the people who are there. He doesn’t feel like one of them, “And now we complain about the soup. Or rather, they do.” The character judges them on how they act, how hypocritical they are or how they take things for granted, e.g., they complained about being in the war and now they are safe they complain about trivial things, like the soup. Barker has put him into a state of denial, even though he didn’t put up a fight when arriving at the hospital. However, he isn’t ......
