Life appears to be glamorous and spectacular in The Great Gatsby. The majority of characters are wealthy and take advantage of this by throwing and attending extravagant parties in pretentious houses in one of the most exclusive neighbourhoods in the United States. However, with a closer, more in-depth examination, ugliness emerges and this beautiful world becomes dark and evil. This experience of seeing the dark side of life was likely familiar to F. Scott Fitzgerald, who moved from a small town to New York when he was young. He wrote The Great Gatsby during the Roaring Twenties, a time when extravagance and wealth coexisted with illegal bootlegging and crime. In the novel, a dichotomy is created in which people, places, and events can appear beautiful and evil at the same time.
