One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: Analyzed Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The movie “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest” was adapted from a book by Ken Kesey. The story is set in a mental asylum in the Pacific Northwest. The film is about total institution, a place in which people are cut off from the rest of society and where they came under almost total control of the officials who run the place (Henslin, 71), in this case the employees of the mental institution where the main character finds confinement. The movie starts out with the introduction of Randall Patrick (R.P.) McMurphy, a man convicted of statutory rape feigning insanity to get out of the work detail in the work farms. Inside the institution the total separation of what society considered to be normal and what is the inmates’ reality widens exponentially as the nurses and doctors in the facility enforce a very totalitarian atmosphere so to better ‘treat’ their patients of their mental ailments. The state of oppression fostered by the medical personnel in the institution led to the inmates looking to R.P. McMurphy as a charismatic leader that is willing to defy the authorities to show......
