Emily Dickinson
Understanding death is important to comprehend Emily Dickinsons view of life. Many critics and readers feel that Emily Dickinsons life has influenced her writings and poetry very much, especially in the topic of death. Ruth Miller states The mythic Emily Dickinson was a shy primitive, a reclusive whose retirement from the active world was due to an act of renunciation, shown in her poetry. (Peterson 501)
In the late 1850s, Emily Dickinson wrote short simple stanza ballad and hymn-like poems. Emilys poems were usually thirty lines or less. She used alternating four-beat/three beat lines most often although she could write against that form and be content with it. Most of her poetry was about human emotion, elation, despair and many about death in general. In the following poem the hymn meter is respected until the last line, it undermines their certainty through both rhythm and image. (Islas 1,2) (Bengtsson 4)
