Roger Chillingworth is True Evil The question of what evil really is has been debated throughout human history. Evil is something that cannot be defined easily. It is instead, based on a personal perception of what is evil and what is good. Evil can come in many different forms. For most people, the act of torture, whether it is physical or mental torture, is evil. In the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the character of Roger Chillingworth is the personification of evil. Through the actions of Roger Chillingworth, one can see what evil is and how the state of mind that an evil person has can lead to conflict. Hawthorne uses Chillingworth as an example of what evil and revenge can do to a person and those close to him. Chillingworth’s evilness and state of mind directly affects the lives of himself, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Hester Prynne. The reader first encounters Roger Chillingworth at the public humiliation of his wife, Hester Prynne, who has committed adultery.
