Frederick Douglass Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave is an excellent book to describe the immoralities of slaveholding. In the book, Douglass tells the story of how he struggled to free himself, mentally and physically, from slavery. His tone is generally straightforward and engaged throughout the story as he demonstrates to the reader that ignorance is a tool of slavery and knowledge is the path to freedom. Douglass acts as both the narrator and the protagonist, and he appears quite different in these two roles. The variation between Douglass’s two personas is, in fact, the point of the Narrative: Douglass progresses from uneducated oppressed slave to worldly and articulate political commentator. During the pre-civil war period, the right to an education was restricted to only white people. This meant white society could enjoy and reap the benefit of an education while others like Frederick Douglass were forced to endure a life of slavery. It was not only culturally acceptable for blacks to be forced into hard back-breaking work, but this was all they knew growing up......
