The Distortion of African Americans Talked About in Ethnic Notions Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
According to Ethnic Notions, racial caricatures and stereotypes were created to rationalize the domination, violence, and enslavement that American Popular Culture had over the African American people. Racial Characters such as the Sambo, Zip Coon, Mammy, and Brute formed throughout popular culture to prove to society that blacks were second-rate to white people; which meant their only logical role would be to serve them.
The first character that was talked about in the film was the Happy Sambo. The Sambo was an innocent, happy old man who no matter what was happening, always had a smile on his face. The Happy Sambo was always happy and took everything in stride. This suggested that he was content serving his white master. This led the people of the time to believe that all slaves were happy, doing what they did best. This was prevalent in the later part of the 1800s as a defense for slavery. Americans view towards this character was that it was a justification for slavery. Sambos were seen as cheerful, childish, and irresponsible; skipping work ......
