Examine the ideas of manliness, hostility and aggression in “A view from the bridge”. How are these ideas connected? The themes of manliness, hostility and aggression often come up in a “view from the bridge”. Eddie, the protagonist, is a character exuding these emotions. Eddie represents all that is manliness, displaying this in his utter bewilderment about Rodolfo. “the guy aint right”. This quote shows all these themes, I believe, Eddie’s dismay about what to do and say when someone who in Eddie’ eyes isn’t how a man should be. This conflict also arises when Marco becomes a threat to Eddie. This brings out the hostility and aggression in Eddie as Marco is seen as big and as strong by the neighbourhood so they were almost vying to be top dog in the neighbourhood. These themes will be brought out in greater detail later in the discussion. Eddie has a very strong view on the characteristics a ‘man’ should have and have not.
