Hamlet Explore what the soliloquies reveal about Hamlet and his state of mind? Hamlets state of mind continually fluctuates throughout the play causing highs and lows in his mood, which finally ends in his downfall and death. Soliloquies, dramatic devices used by the playwright to reveal a character’s innermost thoughts, are used throughout Hamlet. As well as providing a real sense of focus for the audience they give the impression that the actors are being truthful to themselves and subsequently to the audience. As the play progresses, the audience witness Hamlet in a vast range of emotions and much of this is revealed to us in the core soliloquies which will form the basis of my essay. Hamlet’s initial soliloquy is found in Act 1, scene 2 and is the first time the audience meets the ‘real’ Hamlet. His speech portrays his disgust, anger, sorrow, and grief over his mother’s sudden re-marriage so soon after his father’s death. Shakespeare uses extremely powerful and subdued language, which reveals Hamlet’s depressed inner thoughts and the reasons for his despair......
