Is Alison a typical heroine? Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Millers Tale” features a female protagonist named Alison who subverts the traditional characteristics of a heroine from the Courtly Love genre, Courtly Love stems from the medieval worship of the purity, beauty and innocence of the Virgin Mary. This was found in poetry in the 11th century Southern France. The contradictions between the typical qualities found in a heroine and that of Alison helps create a parody of the genre. A heroine usually implies images of bravery and courage, which in my opinion does not fit into the character of Alison and I feel she is far from being like the idealized heroines of courtly romance. One of Chaucer’s traits is his ability to define character in terms of physical appearance and this is found to be especially true for Alison. The comparison between Alison and a “wezele” is stressed by use of syntactic inversions, which highlight certain aspects of her appearance. For example “wezeles” are slim and small like Alison however they have tendencies to be cunning, mischievous and sly ......
