Steven L. Carter’s “The Rules about The Rules” and Mark Clayton’s “A Whole Lot of Cheatin’ Going On” are two very different writings that convey two very similar points. Carter and Clayton both describe ways that America’s ethical standards are slipping and how more and more bad things are being accepted by the American people, but Carter offers a much more complete view of America as a whole, while Clayton focuses only on a small group of college and high school students. Both authors include college students in their writing, but Carter includes everyone in America, so the views on America’s ethical standards cannot be distorted by just looking at the mostly younger and somewhat small group of college students. Stephen L. Carter, author of “The Rules about the Rules” notes that no one follows all of the rules. Many of us cheat on our taxes, and we can all be found speeding from time to time.
