Luhrmanns Romeo and Juliet vs. Zeffirellis Romeo and Juliet
One of Shakespeares many famous plays, the story of Romeo and Juliet has proven to be quite the universal story. Many different directors have taken this universal story and stretched it to fit a multitude of time periods. Two of the most well-known versions are Luhrmanns Romeo and Juliet, which adapts the plot to a modern 1990s look, and Zeffirellis version, which adheres to the typical appearance given by Shakespeare. The differences between these two movies are phenomenal, but yet they both seem to convey the same ideas that were evident in Shakespeares text.
By analyzing just one scene from each version, one can really come to a deeper understanding of the universality of Shakespeares play. For example, Luhrmanns portrayal of the balcony scene in his modernized version of Romeo and Juliet elaborates on the couples relationship more than Zeffirellis version and pulls the audience into the scene through camera placement and scenery; Luhrm......
