Dickinson view on Religion Emily Dickinson was born into a family of means and privilege. During her upbringing, religion was a crucial element in everyday society and it strongly influenced her writing. She wrote many poems on variety of topics. The poem entitled “The Brain __ is wider than the Sky” addresses the idea of humans’ ability to control and manipulate the world around them through the use of mind. The human mind has no limits, but is able to put limits on the world and this idea is explained very well by Dickinson throughout the poem. She uses many metaphors and compares brain into three crucial elements; the sky, the sea and God. The main theme that is being expressed is mans’ manipulation on both the natural world and the spiritual world. In the first stanza she starts her poem by saying “The Brain-is wider than the Sky.” She compares brain with the width of sky. The sky has no boundaries, yet our brains are wider than the sky. What she is trying to explain through this comparison is that the sky is expansive but, the brain has no limits. Thus it ca......
