Dick Winters was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on January 21, 1918, Winters spent
his formative years in eastern Pennsylvania. My earlier hereos were Babe Ruth and Milton S.
Hershey, who founded a school for boys in the town that now bears his name. I graduated from
Franklin-Marshall College in June 1941 with a business major, I then volunteered for military
service. When I first joined the Army I took a series of tests to see where I would best fit. I scored high enough that I qualified for Officer Candidate School [OCS]. My intent was to spend the mandatory one year in the Army, then return to my simple civilian life to pursue a private career. My introduction in August, I spent my basic combat training at Camp Croft, South Carolina, where I was stationed when I received word of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. I was amazed when an officer lectured for an hour about a particular type of rifle while holding the wrong rifle in his hand.
