Symbolism in The Chrysanthemums Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

John Steinbeck often writes about the lives of hard working and lonely people. In one of his short stories, “The Chrysanthemums” flowers are used to symbolize the main character, Elisa, who remains isolated on a ranch with her inattentive husband. She finds refuge in growing her chrysanthemums, until one day when a mysterious pot-mender comes to visit. Upon receiving his attention, she opens herself up to a piece of the world outside, only to come crashing back to reality. It is evident from the beginning that the flowers in this story reflect Elisa’s own life, and her concealment on the farm, her dispassionate relationship with her husband, and her interaction with the unseemly wanderer reveal her fragile emotional inside, underneath her seemingly strong surface. Right from the start, the author describes Elisa’s surroundings as being a dreary, contained place that is closed off from the rest of the world.
