Georges Braque Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Georges Braque was born on May 13, 1882 in the French town of Argenteuil-sur-Seine, near Paris. He grew up as a child there and also in the city of Le Havre where he studied at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts (The School of the Beautiful Arts). By 1899 he apprenticed himself as a house painter, following in his father’s footsteps. At the age of 20, Braque decided to settle in Paris to pursue painting as a fine art. What impressed him the most were the bold styles of works that the fauves (“the wild beats”) had created. The fauves painted with vivid and brilliant colors and a type of loose structure to “capture the most intense emotional response.” A few of the most famous fauves included Henri Matisse and André Derain. While studying, Braque implemented fauvism for a few short years from 1906 to 1907. In late 1907 Braque met Picasso and they soon began to work together, creating the new art-form that would soon be known as cubism. In 1908 Braque shifted his focus to the paintings of Paul Cézanne.
