Few punctuation marks are as misused, misunderstood, and in some cases reviled as the semicolon. For its proper definition and intended use one need only look at the mark itself. Simultaneously half-period and half-comma, the semicolon is intended to show a direct connection between two independent clauses. The semicolon can also be used to bring order to otherwise unwieldy lists. Other aspects of its utilization, however, have been the source of great debate and uncertainty in realms inside and outside of the literary and grammatical world.
The Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style defines the semicolon as, punctuation marka kind of supercommaseparates sentence parts that need a more distinct break than a comma can signal, but that are too closely connected to be made into separate sentences (Garner). This definition illustrates the view that a semicolon can be a hard comma or a soft period.
