Post Impressionism Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Popular culture has pigeonholed Vincent van Gogh's celebrated masterpiece, Starry Night at St. Rémy, as the feverish work of the archetypal mad artist. Modern criticism has attempted to delve deeper, but this has only resulted in scattered interpretations that, while recognizing the contribution of literature to van Gogh's work, otherwise fail to construct a meaningful reading of the painting's view toward religion, its prevailing mood, or even plausible identities of its compositional elements. However, when reconsidered as a whole against the evidence of the painting (and, interestingly enough, the mechanics of astronomy), the mistaken and far-fetched interpretations fall away and a more solid understanding of this piece of cultural iconography and art history becomes possible. What this synthesis of interpretations reveals is that van Gogh constructed his Starry Night at St. Remy as a composite of real world elements manipulated to convey a (romantic) sense of comfort in the infinity of the universe. In doing so, he drew upon cultural, literary, and biblical sources to enable him......
