F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby portrays an era of decayed social and moral values. A time where money could buy happiness, or so it seemed. After the war, the American people were in hot pursuit of happiness and used any means necessary to achieve it. On one hand, the glamorous, extravagant lifestyle is one to be envied, with lavish parties and social events used to fill ones time, but it can also be seen as a reckless quest for empty happiness that didn’t exist. Myrtle Wilson, Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan are all excellent examples of people living in an era that on the outside looks delectable and delicious but on the inside is hollow and disappointing. Daisy has it all, but is careless and hurtful, using her money to shield her from the consequences of her actions. Myrtle is gluttonous and greedy, forever trying to fit into a class that she can never be a part of. Gatsby himself uses money to indulge himself in lavish and elaborate luxuries but he is excessive and overly flamboyant.
