The Effects of the Victorian Period Authors relate their novels to what is going on during the time period that they are writing in. During the Victorian period when Arthur Doyle was writing The Hound of Baskervilles, there was backstabbing, chaos, and trading going on in the world. Literature in the Victorian Age reflected what was going on during the time. Victoria became queen of Great Britain in 1837. Her reign, the longest in English history, lasted until 1901.
