Roman theatrical entertainment and entertainment today are similar in content. Roman entertainment started with Attic tragedy which came as a result from a form of Greek poetry. It was presented in part of the public religious observation in honor of the god Dionysus, festivals shown were civic occasions.

Musicals such as these had dramatic performances that were originally intended as acts of worship not entertainment.
Roman comedy had three kinds or phases of comedy Old Comedy, Middle Comedy and New Comedy.
Old Comedy was introduced in to Dionysian festival early in the fifth century. They were primary about being invective and satire against contemporary figures as Pericles, Cleon, Socrates and Euripides. The earliest stage seems to have been a type of farce and buffoonery performed by wandering bands of actors.
