Robert E. Lee Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Robert Edward Lee was born in Stratford, Virginia on January 19, 1807. He was son of the American military leader and politician who was a great cavalry commander during the American War of Independence, Henry Lee. Robert graduated at the United States Military Academy as the second in his class in 1829. When he graduated he received a commission as second lieutenant in the engineers. When he had been there for seven years, he became first lieutenant, and two years later, in 1838, he became captain. Robert fought in the battles of the Mexican-American War, but he got wounded in the storming of Chapultepec in 1847. For his tremendous service he was rewarded his third brevet promotion in rank. In the years to come he became superintendent of the United States Military Academy, and not long after he was appointed colonel of cavalry. In 1860 Robert was in command of the Department of Texas. The very same year, before the war broke out, Abraham Lincoln called him to Washington D.C., and he was offered the field command of the Union forces, but Robert wouldn’t accept it.
