Shakespeare’s harrowing tale of a man driven to murder those that were originally close friends of his, tells the story of a man victimized. A man forced into action by the truths (or untruths) told to him by both his wife, and the witches within the play. Macbeth can only be considered a victim due to the unease he feels and reluctance to act displayed by the character through the play, his initial indecision being what the other characters use against him constantly. The Three Witches are an important part of the play. If it were not for their favoritism of Macbeth then he would never have been stirred into action. Their prophesy played on Macbeth’s own personality flaws, his indecisions and lust for power. ‘All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter!’, this prophesy that creates in a man a want to kill those that were his allies and friends, is a clear attack on his character and a distinct victimization of this character above all others.
