Chapter One
The narrator, Reuven Malter, begins the story by telling about a character named Danny Saunders. The two lived within five blocks of one another for fifteen years, but they never met because they lived in different worlds. Danny was Russian Hasidic Jew. He lived in a neighborhood "heavily populated by the followers of his father", Rev Saunders. They dressed differently than everyone else, ate different foods, attended a different yeshiva (school), and even spoke a different language.
With the onset of the War, the English teachers in the Jewish parochial schools organized a softball teams in their schools. Every two weeks the schools competed with each other.
One afternoon, Reuven's team was scheduled to play Danny's team. Mr. Galanter, Reuven's coach, told his team that the opposing team was know for "wild, offensive slugging and poor fielding". Davey Cantor, another of Reuven's teammates informed Reuven that the team they were getting ready to play was critical.
