Diamonds are a mineral form of the element carbon. Diamonds are the hardest natural substance known; they are used as a gem and in industry. Diamonds are transparent and translucent white, yellow, green, blue, or brown octahedrons. Diamonds have a very high reflexive index causing them to be extraordinarily brilliant. Their reflexive index is greater than any other naturally occurring gemstone. Diamonds are found in alluvial formations. Alluvial formations are loose earthy materials deposited by running water. Diamonds can also be found in volcanic pipes where they have been deposited by deep-origin volcanoes drawing material from over 90 miles (150 km) deep within the Earth, where the pressure and temperature is suitable for diamond formation.
Diamonds are mined by the open-pit method and by underground mining. After the diamonds are removed from the surface they are crushed and concentrated.
