For Durkheim, social sciences have to address a major question: Why is it that, in modern society, each person enjoys more freedom and, at the same time, is becoming increasingly dependent on society as a whole? In this perspective, the division of labor is considered not only a powerful economic tool leading to a strong rise in the available quantity of wealth but also as an institution through which the two sides of modern society can hold together. In his doctoral dissertation, Durkheim grounded his approach on a "materialistic" explanation, emphasizing the role played by two "facts of social morphology": the number of people ("social volume") in a given area with a given means of communication and the strength of links ("social density") connecting these people together (Durkheim 1893, 238-44) The growth of these two variables makes the struggle for life more acute and, thus, renders the division of labor more fitted to the needs of this population.
