Booker T. Washington was one of the most influential African American leaders this country has ever seen. He fought against the odds, being a former slave, and delivered some of the most powerful speeches on how the black man is pictured in American society. He felt the key to success for blacks in America was knowledge; not just schooling, but in the agricultural and industrial trades. In his mind, hard work would be the key to succeeding in the fight for equality. With these ideals in mind, Washington founded a learning center that would become the most dominant agricultural and industrial school for African Americans. With his noble idea of education being the pathway to success, his hard work and determination gained respect from whites and blacks alike. The countrys leaders agreed with these principles and therefore offered Washington their full support.
