Standards and Multiculturalism Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Bill Bigelow, a teacher at Franklin High School in Portland, Oregon and an editor of the online journal Rethinking Schools, wrote the article Standards and Multiculturalism which discusses the standardized exams for social studies assessments that were given to students for the first time in the fall of 1999 in Oregon and its affects on multicultural education. In this article, Bigelow discusses how teachers were disappointed to find that the exams were nothing more than a multiple choice exam full of hit or miss questions on the Constitutional amendments, World War One, global climate, rivers in India, population projections, Supreme Court decisions, and economic terminology.
In his opinion, Bigelow believes that Oregons perspective of Social Studies knowledge is little more than acquiring piles of disconnected facts about the world (Standards, 1).
