Consumption in America Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The film Manufacturing Consent raises and confronts some interesting issues I had not considered. In the video, Noam Chomsky discusses the ways in which the media uses propaganda as a method of thought control in our society. He believes that the media in the U.S. represents a monolithic point of view and is used as a propaganda agent to form public opinion and ensure cultural conformity.
While watching the film I found myself agreeing with many of his Chomskys ideas. Never before had I looked at the media from the perspective of agenda setters. This, however, seemed to be the case. As an example, Chomsky compares the media coverage of Pol Pot's Cambodia with the media coverage of Indonesia's invasion of East Timor. In comparing the two, we discover these similarly scaled atrocities occurred in the same time frame in the same part of the world. Although these two events paralleled each other in many ways, the coverage they received could not have been more different.
