Feudal Values and the Song of Roland The Song of Roland, written by an unknown poet around the beginning of the Crusades, is an epic whose plot focuses primarily on the battle between the rearguard of Charlemagne’s French army and the Saracen Spanish army of King Marsile of Saragossa. Roland, a Count and nephew of the French king led the army in the defense against the Spanish assault. The tale reflects the struggle between Christianity and Islam during the time period, and can also be seen as an epic that reflects the values of the society of the middle ages. It can be seen as a text that is used to inspire faith and confidence in feudal and Christian values. I believe that it is very useful to read the Song of Roland because the epic reflects the military, social, and religious values of feudal France, and because these values are important in today’s society. One facet of feudal society that The Song of Roland reflects is the emphasis on military values including aspects like bravery and courage in the face of the enemy, and placing victory above all else.
