Golda Meir
Golda Meir was born in May 3, 1898 in Kiev, Russia. Her name before she was married was Golda Mabovitch. Her family moved to the United States when she was eight and she was raised there. She moved to the United States in 1906 and lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She taught school there for several years.
She and her family were forced to move to Milwaukee, Wisconsin because of hardship. Her father was the first one to move. She, her mother, and her two sisters joined him later in 1906.
Life in America was hard for poorer families. At eight years old, she had to work in her mothers grocery store every morning. This left her with no choice but to be late for school.
At the end, her mother wanted her to give up high school, work in the grocery store permanently, and get married. But Golda wanted to finish her school years and get a good education. At age fourteen, she ran away to Denver to live with her older sister Sheyna and go to school. She got there successfully and went to school as planned.
