The difference between Irving’s and Burton’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

There are many differences between Irving’s short story and Burton’s movie. The characters and storyline take on more complexity in the movie than in the original short story. The audience felt more connected to the movie, due to the added dimension of the storyline and characters. The movie Sleepy Hollow was expanded and had more complexity in it than Irving’s short story. If Burton had followed the short story verbatim it would not fill 45 minutes of a movie. Burton had to stretch the storyline out for the cinema audience. Right from the beginning the two differ with the creation of the step-mother in the movie. The step-mother is the first and main antagonist in the movie, she being the one driving the Headless Horseman to slay people. Ichabod Crane remains the protagonist in each, but the number and the order of importance of the antagonists are changed. The short story lists Brom Bones as the first antagonist, while the Headless Horseman is second. The movie portrays Brom more as a secondary antagonist to the step-mother, where he dresses up as the horseman to scare Ichabod......
