African America's Obstacles Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

African-American people have had to climb over many obstacles to gain the productive positions they hold today. We first dealt with slavery and being treated like an animal. After the slavery issue was abolished, we faced racial discrimination and hatred now known as oppression. African- American women had to deal with all the previously mentioned issues, along with being a woman, but more descriptively a “black woman”. We as colored women had had the cards stack up against us. Alice Walker’s The Color Purple identifies a few obstacles, we as black women had to overcome in order to express ourselves. Two obstacles in particular, which I found intriguing: 1. The lack of education 2. Oppression by both society and “the black man”. African-Americans have always experienced oppression and racism throughout our habitation in America. Slavery was the major contributor of the hatred we have endured, and are still enduring.
