The impact of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita will go far beyond the life of the tropical storms. In late August, we saw the most devastating Hurricane to reach the Gulf of Mexico in years. Hurricane Katrinas immediate impact caused massive flooding, destroyed buildings, and loss of power to millions of homes along the Florida panhandle to Louisiana. About one month later, a second Hurricane, Rita, also struck only to intensify Katrinas impact. The local economies of Louisiana and Mississippi have been devastated. Businesses from all sectors are decimated, while tourism, mainly supported by New Orleans and the Gulf Coast area, will be nonexistent for months to come. Not only did these hurricanes take the lives and homes away from residents they also made a large financial impact on the state of our economy.
