In the article, M. M. Gromyko discusses very remarkable examinations about peasant mentalities, their sense of justice, their understanding of chorological events and their spiritual life. In addition, she describes the Russian peasants basic attitude toward folklore, celebration, writing, music, superstitions, religion, craft, and oral transmission.
First of all, peasants strongly believed in traditional rights. In their minds the link existed between the rights of their forefathers with their own rights. They simply assumed that they share the same burdens as their great grandfather and fathers have done. As a result, Russian peasants never thought of themselves as slaves. They truly believed that they belonged to the land, that they were an integral part of the land. But the land belonged to the landowner thus making them also belong to the landowner.
