History has blurred the actual time-line in which many historians consider the greatest and most feared conqueror yet known was born onto the earth. The years vary from 1165-1167, but the area into which Genghis Khan was born was one where war and tribal separation plagued the Mongols of the steppe lands northeast of China. During this time, the Mongol tribes warred with each other. They were a nomadic group, and most were poor and illiterate. So poor in fact, that a few tribes resorted to cannibalism in hard times. Genghis Khan, born under the name Temujin, was born near the Onon River, clutching a clot of blood as legend goes. Although most of his early life is veiled in legends and myths, it is known that he was born to a minor Mongol chieftain, Yisugei. Yisugei was hated by many rival tribes, namely the Tartars, for theft, and the Merkits, for stealing one of their brides. For that very reason, the Tartars poisoned Yisugei when Temujin was between nine and thirteen years old, leaving Hoelun, Temujins mother, and three children to fend for themselves.
