How was the behavior of the Ku Klux Klan similar at the time of its organization to today? The original Ku Klux Klan was organized by ex-Confederate elements to oppose the Reconstruction policies of the radical Republican Congress and to maintain “white supremacy”. After the Civil War local government in Southern states was weak and there were fears of Black uprisings, and armed patrols were formed in almost all communities. These patrols, such as Men of Justin, The Pale Faces, and the White Brotherhood were later absorbed into the Ku Klux Klan. The Klan was organized in Pulaski, Tennessee in May, 1866. The members found ways of playing upon the fears and superstitions of its local communities. The men dressed in flowing white robes, covered their faces with white masks, and, they posed as ghosts of the Confederate dead returned from the grave. The Klan members would muffle their horses’ feet and cover the horses with white robes and go on “midnight rides.” The Klan was able to achieve its aim by terrorizing people, with whippings, lynchings, burning houses down, and ......
