Mad Cow Disease Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

This paper outlines the disease of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) and the relationship between BSE and new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). The focus will be on transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) in both humans and animals which relates back to mad cow disease. The possible reasons for this outbreak are discussed briefly with the main focus being on TSEs, more specifically the prion hypothesis. Mad cow disease otherwise know as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a fatal, disease of cattle which was first documented in the United Kingdom in 1986. Since then it has spread throughout Europe, Japan and now as well in Canada. The reason why this disease is such an epidemic is because it infects by a mechanism that appears transmissible to humans. Even though this disease has not had such an effect of killing cattle, such as hoof-and-mouth, BSE has created a lot of fear because of the lethality to humans, in terms of mental decay.
