The Natural Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the novel The Natural, Bernard Malamud uses two completely different interpretations of womanhood in society, and their effects on the main character, Roy, to emphasize his point that although evil is more tempting than virtue, goodness is a stronger force. He uses archetypes to aid in his portrayal of the characters. His first interpretation is of Memo Paris, the niece of the manager of Roy’s baseball team, who is in essence a manipulative Witch. She only cares about herself and will do anything to get what she wants. Malamud’s second model is Iris Lemon, who is a direct representative of all that is good in humanity. She is a kind and generous woman caught in the grasp of a harsh world, a Giver, to whom many are indebted. Although Roy is enchanted by Memo for most of the book, Iris is the only one he truly falls deeply in love with. The two characters Memo and Iris indicate that even though a Witch is a better temptress, a Giver tends to attract stronger, more profound feelings.
