Comparing the Great Floods Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Comparing the “Great Floods” The story of the great flood told by Utanapishtim has a lot of similarities as the story of the great flood in the Bible. There are also differences as well though. I would say that the biggest difference is the number of gods that are in the story told by Utanapishtim. In the Bible there is only one God and he is referred to as “God.” As it shows in Genesis 6:5, the first part of this verse states, “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth[…]” He didn’t have a name like the ones in the story that Utanapishtim tells. In his story there were several gods. However, one god chose to destroy humanity and that was Enlil, who was ruler of all of the gods. In this story Enlil calls all of the other gods together for a gathering in which he declares his frustrations with humanity by saying, “The people who live upon the broad earth have become numerous beyond count, and they are too noisy.”(49) At this point he lets known his desire to destroy the earth and the humans who live on it with a great flood.
