Erik Erikson (1902-1994) Psychosocial Theory Erik Erikson Erik Erikson was born in 1902 near Frankfurt, Germany. In 1920 instead of going to college he travelled throughout Europe as an n artist, keeping a diary of his experiences. He became a teacher in a Vienna private school, and trained as a psychoanalyst from 1927 1933 working under Anna Freud, specializing in child psychology. After emigrating to the U.S.A in 1933 he taught at Harvard Medical School where he engaged in a variety of clinical work, widening the scope of psychoanalytic theory to take greater account of social, cultural and other environmental factors. Later on he held positions at institutions including Yale, Berkeley, and the Menninger Foundation. He then went to the centre for advanced study in behavioural sciences at Palo Alto and later the Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco where he was clinician and psychiatric consultant.
