The definition of a medical transplant is a surgical procedure that transfers a living tissue or organ to an ill person that needs that tissue or organ to become healthy once again. Transplants have become much more common within the last century as a result of technological breakthroughs which have allowed doctors to better understand the ways in which tissues and organs can be kept alive long enough to transplant them into another persons body. Today, there are more than twenty one different kinds of organ transplants, from kidney transplants to heart transplants as well as countless numbers of tissue transplants, such as bone marrow transplants and blood transfusions. It is only recently that these organs have been successfully transplanted into human patients.
