Irony in Oedipus Rex Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Sophocles Oedipus Rex contains enough irony to pass as a dictionary denotation of the word itself. The fact that Oedipus leaves Polybus and Merope, King and Queen of Corinthand, unbeknownst to Oedipus, his adopted parentsto keep a prophecy of the Delphi Oracle from becoming reality, only to run into his biological parents thus enabling the prediction to become actuality. Not only this, but upon hearing of how the former King of ThebesOedipus father Laiusdied, Oedipus promptly forbids the country from receiving the murderer, who, ironically, happens to be himself.
Going back to the beginning of the play, it starts out by providing the audience with an introductory note that explains how Laius and Jocasta give their infant son to a shepherd with orders to leave him to die on the mountainside. The reason for this being that the couple received a prophecy that their new son would kill his father, so naturally they decided to kill their son before this could happen. Then when the shepherd feels pity for Oedipus and gives him to Polybus and Merope, King and Queen of Corin......
