Inherent Value of Knowledge in Utopia Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In Thomas Mores Utopia, the philosopher turned explorer Raphael Hithloday introduces to his acquaintances a new nation, which he has haphazardly stumbled upon in his explorations. This nation is called Utopia, and it boasts common possession of goods, no hierarchy of classes, highly specialized and well educated subjects, and general peace. Utopia is presented as a clearly superior society to that of England; free of the difficulties with which the European societies struggled. Yet, what is even more intriguing than the actual proposal of the society itself is the clear debate which frames both the beginning and end of Hithlodays narrative. While listening to his introduction of the nation, Hithlodays acquaintances suggest that he share his wealth of knowledge with the political powers that be. Hithlodays response, however, demonstrates his extreme distaste of the idea. He cites the fact that his wisdom and advice would be inevitably rejected, and therefore should not be wasted through a doomed proposal. Yet he then goes on to present the society in detail to his acquaint......
